This week on The NDTV Dialogues we focus on the right to die. The death of Aruna Shanbaug after 42 years in what was described as a permanent vegetative state once again brought India's attention to the larger issue of euthanasia. In fact for the first time, passive euthanasia was allowed in India in certain cases under strict regulations in a case relating to Aruna. Was her death the end of a life sentence or an affirmation of a right to life whatever the outside world's perceptions may be? The jury is out on this but joining NDTV on this debate are Justice Gyan Sudha Misra, the judge who along with Justice Katju gave the verdict in the Aruna case; Pinki Virani, biographer of Aruna Shanbaug and petitioner as the next friend in that case; critical care specialist, Dr RK Mani; and Harmala Gupta, founder president of CanSupport who works with critically ill patients and their families every day.
