Tamil Nadu Farmer Commits Suicide After Rain Ruins Paddy Crop

The farmer from Tamil Nadu comiitted suicide after rains spoiled his paddy crop.

Thanjavur: His paddy crop spoilt by the rain and left with little other than thousands in debt, a 70-year-old farmer has killed himself in Tamil Nadu.

N Selvaraj consumed poison and was found collapsed near his home in the Thanjavur district on the 3rd of this month. Though he was taken to hospital, he couldn't be revived.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter.

"Selvaraj also had a loan of Rs 15,000 obtained from private money lenders," Cauvery Dhanapal, a leader in the Delta Farmers Protection Association said.

The tragedy comes at a time when thousands of farmers from the entire delta region in central Tamil Nadu await the release of Cauvery River waters by Karnataka.

Though Karnataka had initially said it only has enough water for drinking requirements, the state is releasing 15,000 cusecs of water following an order by the Supreme Court. However, Tamil Nadu says it needs close to four times as much.
