10 Lakh Devotees To Gather At Kumbakonam For Mahamaham

Kumbakonam: More than 10 lakh devotees will take a holy dip at the temple tank at Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu as part of the grand finale of the Mahamaham festival celebrated once in twelve years.

The auspicious time for the dip which is called 'Theerthavari' will between 12 noon and 1 pm.

Twenty five thousand police personnel are on duty and four hundred CCTV cameras would keep watch. A fleet of ambulances and first responder bikes are ready to take care of any emergencies.

Two thousand sanitary workers have also  been deployed to ensure there's no health crisis.

Dr N Subbaiyan, District Collector of Thanjavur said, "25,000 police personnel including senior officials are on duty. Sanitary workers are cleaning the tank every hour to ensure nothing goes wrong."

The government has arranged fifty donors to provide free food for devotees at various points. The state administration is also distributing 15 lakh drinking water bottles.

In 1992, forty people died in a stampede here while Chief Minister Jayalalithaa and her friend Sasikala took the holy dip.
