After the miraculous rescue of one soldier, the Indian Army began training its soldiers for avalanche rescue in high altitudes. The training took place near LoC or Line of Control in Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir.
The training for rescue operations began a week after an avalanche struck at Siachen on February 3.
On Monday, army rescuers found Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad six days after his fibre- reinforced hut was buried in ice by the avalanche.
In Siachen, at an altitude of 19,600 feet, not even the hardiest and most altitude-adapted rescuers can work more than 30 minutes at a stretch.
Rescuing a soldier at Siachen, often described as the world's highest battlefield, has been described as nothing short of a miracle.
Training soldiers in Siachen thus becomes very important as more soldiers have died here because of the weather and difficult terrain than in battle.
