Cuttack: A house trespasser allegedly self immolated to escape from public humiliation when he found himself locked inside the house and cornered by locals.

The shocking incident took place at Manik Ghosh Bazaar under Purighat police station in Cuttack today.

According to police, the 35-year-old man entered into the house of Triveni Devi of the locality in the wee hours of the day just when Triveni Devi had left her house keeping the doors ajar to collect water from a nearby stand post. Seeing someone had entered her house, Triveni Devi, reportedly, locked the door from outside and sounded an alert. The 65-year-old lady stays alone in the house, police said.

After about half-an-hour, when police arrived at the spot around 5.30 am, people saw columns of smoke coming out of the house. Perturbed over the incident, when police opened the door, everybody was shocked to see the youth lying dead in a room with over 70 per cent burns.

"We have registered a case in this matter and sent the body for post mortem", said the local police inspector Tapas Chandra Pradhan suspecting that the youth might have taken the extreme step of self immolation to escape from public humiliation.
