Mumbai: Stressing on students' safety, Supreme Court today directed a Mumbai school to vacate the illegal building within four weeks.

A few months ago BMC demolished a part of city's St Thomas school building which was on nullah. Following this, the school had challenged the demolition in Bombay High Court.

On June 8, the high court, citing students' safety, ruled that the school can't run in the premises and ordered shifting within four weeks.

The school moved Supreme Court against the high court order and argued that the school building is safe and for its 3,000 students. The school also demanded that the date for vacating the building, should be extended to April - the next academic session.

Dismissing the plea, Supreme Court told the school, "Everyone knows the situation in Mumbai during monsoon and the nullahs are flooded and it is dangerous. We can't overlook the lives of the students. Students' safety is the top priority.  You must shift immediately."

On the school's argument that alternate site will take time to construct, the top court said:  "You can take rented accommodation till the new building is constructed."
