Mumbai: A local train was delayed during early morning rush hour at Thane station, but the reason for it had commuters cheering and clapping instead. Early yesterday morning, a woman gave birth to a boy on the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) bound local train which had arrived at Thane station.

Sources said that the train arrived at 8.29 am as per its scheduled arrival, but then as it entered platform 4 at Thane, there was chaos inside the middle compartment meant for the physically challenged and pregnant women. "We received a call on our helpline number about a woman delivering a child inside the compartment and so we immediately made arrangements for an ambulance and stretcher. We, too, rushed there with railway staff," said an RPF policewoman who rushed to attend to the mother.

Eyewitnesses said the delivery had already taken place inside the compartment and the other women in the compartment had gathered around to shield and help the woman. The train was made to halt at the station until the mother and baby were transferred to the ambulance and ferried to the hospital.

"When I reached the platform, I saw people surrounding the compartment. Soon after, people began to cheer and clap as the baby and mother were brought out in a stretcher," said Anuja Abraham, who boarded the same train from Thane and was heading for Ghatkopar.

The drama went on for around 20 minutes or so. The mother and child were then taken to Thane Civil Hospital in an ambulance. The stationmaster then issued a memo asking the motorman to start the train once the mother and child were safely taken off the train, which then left at 8.55am.
