Villagers Protest After Boat Capsizes in Bengal's Burdwan

Alleging delay in rescue operations, locals went on a rampage at the Kalna Ghat, setting fire to several boats

Kalna, Burdwan: Tension has been reported in West Bengal's Burdwan district after a passenger boat capsized in the Bhagirathi river on Saturday night. Locals set boats on fire allegedly over delay in rescue operation, police said today.

The overcrowded boat was carrying passengers from Shantipur in Nadia to Kalna in Burdwan district when it sank last night. There is no clarity on the number of people traveling on the boat.

While many swam to safety, four people are still were missing, the local administration said. However, the villagers say the number could be more.

Enraged over what they alleged was the administration's delay in starting rescue and search operations, locals went on a rampage at the Kalna Ghat, setting fire to several boats and pelting stones at policemen.

Police reportedly had to resort to mild lathicharge and tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.

The administration has appealed for calm as the disaster management teams are conducting rescue operations.

CPI(M) leader, Surjya Kanta Mishra tweeted, "Speeding up of rescue operations @Kalna-Santipur boat drowning site is urgent. Tear gas&fire no solution!!Join&Help rescue efforts&work!!"
