Patna: The name of yet another RJD legislator has come up in connection with a murder case in Bihar.  Lalit Yadav - the five-time legislator from Darbanga Rural -- has been accused of involvement in the murder of Heera Paswan, a land broker, who was gunned down on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, the police filed a case on basis of a complaint by Mr Paswan's brother. The complaint said Mr Paswan was continuously facing threats from Mr Yadav, 49, over a land deal.

Mr Paswan, 35, was shot down on the outskirts of Madhopur-Makhnahi village in Darbhanga district on Tuesday morning. Agitated over the incident, the locals had blocked National Highway 77, paralysing traffic for almost four hours.

Quoting the police, news agency Press Trust Of India said Mr Paswan had left home after receiving a phone call. His cellphone was found on him, but the police are yet to say who had made the call.

Denying any involvement in the case on Tuesday, Mr Yadav said he was ready to face any inquiry -- including one by the Central Bureau of Investigation -- as he is innocent.

A senior RJD leader, Mr Yadav has faced several charges including beating up of a Dalit driver in 2000 when he has to step down as minister in the Rabari Devi cabinet.

The Nitish Kumar government has been up against BJP allegations of "jungle raj" following a string of high profile criminal cases over the last few months. The BJP claims the lawmakers of the JD(U) and RJD are involved in some of them, including the murders of teenager Aditya Sachdeva in Gaya and journalist Rajdeo Ranjan in Siwan.

Mr Sachdeva was shot dead allegedly by the son of JD(U) lawmaker Manorama Devi in Gaya on May 7 in a road rage case. RJD leader Shahbuddin's name had cropped up in the murder of Mr Ranjan, who was gunned down in Chatra on May 13.

Citing the sudden spate of crime, BJP allies like Lok Janashakti Party chief Ram Vilas Paswan and former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi have called for President's Rule in the state.
