'Police Shooed Me Away,' Says Rape Survivor. Gurgaon Cops Deny Charge.

The police say the teen's allegations are " baseless", pointing out that her appeal to a court did not even name the policemen allegedly involved.

New Delhi: A teenager allegedly raped by her landlord in Gurgaon has accused the local police of obstructing her from filing a complaint and is now harassing her - a charge the police have denied.

The girl had told NDTV that on November 23, Dharamvir Thakran had broken into her room at night, raped her at gunpoint, and demanded that she keep quiet. Two days later, the incident was repeated.

But when she went to the police, she was told to "go home". "I went to Gurgaon police commissioner to meet him, but Navdeep Singh Virk shooed me away. He said no work of yours will be done here," she told NDTV.

The police, she said, have not detained the accused, since he is an influential man who owns several properties.

Stunned by the police response and too scared to go back home, the 18-year-old from Ludhiana said she spent the night at a local Gurdwara.

The following day she went to the police again, who took her to a woman's cell. But there, she said, she was made to write on a letter saying that she came "only to meet the commissioner and not to file an FIR".

Later with the help from activists, and an FIR was lodged. A medical test has confirmed rape, sources told NDTV.

The ACP and SHO had been harassing her and demanding that she go home. "'We won't lose our jobs if you go,' they said," the teenager told NDTV.

The police say the allegations were " baseless", pointing out that the teenager's appeal to a court did not even name the policemen allegedly involved. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Sadar, Ms Dhaarna Yadav, further said the girl did not divulge her identity even for the filing of the FIR.

"The mahila police station treated her with utmost sensitivity and care... The FIR was lodged after the complaint was received," she added.

Police Commissioner of Gurgaon, Navdeep Singh Virk, told NDTV that the girl's allegations were false. "I meet all people who come to meet," he said.

The teenager has now gone back to Punjab with her family. It is just a matter of time before the accused, who is on the run, is arrested, the police say.
