Now, Rs 5,000 Fine for Burning Trash in Public Spaces in Capital Region

Earlier this month, the green court criticized the governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for not complying with its orders on tackling pollution.

New Delhi: Anyone found burning garbage in the open in and around Delhi will be fined Rs 5,000, the National Green Tribunal has ordered.

In its ruling on Tuesday, the green court also asked the Delhi Pollution Control Committee to file a report on how it plans to implement the order.

Citizens can complain to the pollution control panel or the police about people burning trash, including leaves, plastic, rubber or any other polluting material. The complaint can be sent in writing, by email, through Facebook or on WhatsApp.

The local police or civic officers will be held responsible for any violations of the order.

The tribunal also warned civic bodies that if it continued to hear about the burning of leaves and garbage in Lodhi Road, Khan Market and adjoining areas in the heart of Delhi - where a lot of leaves are burned - municipal officers of the area will be fined.

In separate orders, the tribunal recently banned petrol vehicles older than 15 years, and 10-year-old diesel vehicles, from the National Capital Region. But the government is struggling to execute the ban as it directly affects essential services including vegetable supply and garbage clearance. The Centre on Monday asked for a stay on these orders and six months to come up with a solution.

Earlier this month, the green court criticized the governments of Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh for not complying with its orders on tackling pollution. "Delhi is becoming vulnerable to various diseases and the greatest sufferers are the children," said the Tribunal.
