Live Updates: Pathankot, Gurdaspur On Alert After Terror Attack In Uri

Uri, Jammu and Kashmir: Seventeen soldiers have died and several others are injured after a group of terrorists attacked an Army base in Jammu and Kashmir's Uri. The base is located just 6 km from the Line of Control, in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir. All four terrorists, part of a suicide squad, were killed in a six-hour encounter.

An alert has been sounded in Punjab's border districts of Pathankot and Gurdaspur following the terror strike on an army camp at Uri in Jammu and Kashmir that claimed the lives of 17 soldiers.

Tight vigil is being maintained near key installations including the Pathankot Airforce base, that had come under attack by terrorists in January this year, and near Indo-Pak border areas, police said.

"There is an increase in infiltration bids by terrorists from across Indo-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir during this year," Minister of State for Home Hansraj Ahir has said.

"A threat was issued by Pakistan-based terrorist around 10 days ago. This is them unleashing a full-scale offensive in context of what has been going on in Kashmir for the last two months," says Lt General Shankar Prasad (Retd.).

"The fidayeens who targeted Uri today have been looking for soft targets. The attack today included strikes on tents so they were soft targets," he says.

Army Chief Dalbir Singh has already reached Srinagar. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar is also expected shortly, reports NDTV's Sheikh Zaffar Iqbal from Srinagar.

"Lapses will looked into. But the camp was targeted specifically at a time when one batallion was going out and the other coming in (at the end of of a duty tour)," he says.

NDTV's Nazir Masoodi reports from Uri about the evacuation of the injured soldiers from the base.

"The evacuation was very swift. Army helicopters were rushed in, wasting no time. The injured have been air-lifted to the Army hospital in Srinagar. Condition of some of the soldiers remains very critical," he says.

The heavily-armed terrorists struck the military installation around 4 am, targeting the rear administrative base. The base had a large number of troops who were turning over after their tour of duty and were stationed in temporary shelters which caught fire, resulting in heavy casualties, the Army said in a statement.
