Jharkhand Police Probe Extortion Link In Journalist's Killing, 3 Arrested

Television journalist Akhilesh Pratap Singh was shot dead in Jharkhand last week

Chatra: Three people have been arrested today in connection with the murder of television journalist Akhilesh Pratap Singh in Jharkhand last week.

According to the police, all the accused are members of a local Maoist outfit and allegedly plotted and killed 35-year-old journalist in Jharkhand's Chatra reportedly because he had refused to pay a Rs 7 lakh levy.

The cops say Mr Singh had also been a part time contractor with the electricity department for the last three years and used to install electric poles in remote Maoist affected villages. He was reportedly threatened a few days before his murder.

"He had also been a contractor for three years. The shooter has been identified but we haven't managed to arrest the person, we will recover the weapon from him, said Anjani Kumar Jha, Superintendent of Police of Chatra

Cops have recovered the motorcycle used to carry out the killing. One of those arrested is the local representative of the legislator in the area. However, so far, no political involvement has been established in the case.
