Independent India Turns 70, PM Narendra Modi Addresses Nation

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing the nation from the ramparts of the historic Red Fort on the occasion of the 70th Independence Day. The 17th Century fort - a heritage monument -- and its adjoining areas have been put under an unprecedented air-to-ground security blanket.

Here are the latest developments:

  1. The Prime Minister inspected the Guard of Honour at the Red Fort and unfurled the Tricolour before addressing the nation. His Guard of Honour contingent comprised of one officer and 24 men each from Army, Navy, Air Force and Delhi Police.

  2. A special team of NSG snipers and commandos form the inner layers of the security cordon at the Red Fort. Besides, 5,000 police personnel have been stationed and anti-aircraft guns deployed.

  3. Nearly 200 CCTV cameras have been placed at the fort; 600 rooftops have been identified as sensitive and a census of 9,000 people living in the area has been done this year.

  4. The Delhi Police have made massive security deployment elsewhere in too. On the way to the Red Fort, 360 CCTV cameras have been placed across a 4-kilometer stretch; 2,500 policemen will line the route.

  5. A multi-layer security has also been thrown around Delhi's Rajpath, where a seven-day-long cultural festival 'Bharat Parv' is underway.

  6. Vital installations in and around Delhi have been closed from August 14. Aerial activities like para-gliding, flying UAVs and hot air balloons have been prohibited across the city till October 10.

  7. PM Modi has ordered a detailed people contact programme as part of the fortnight-long celebrations on the occasion.

  8. From August 15, the BJP lawmakers have been asked go on a week-long Tiranga Yatra in their constituencies.

  9. The Prime Minister has asked for detailed reports of the yatra - to be undertaken on motorcycles -- on Facebook. The lawmakers are expected to post 500 to 1000 photos each as proof of participation.

  10. The yatra is part of the "70 Saal Azadi - Zara Yaad Karo Kurbani' (70 years of independence: Do recall the sacrifices)" - a programme launched by PM Modi on August 9.
