Dengue Claims 3 Lives In Maharashtra, Over 2,000 Cases

Mumbai: A Maharashtra police constable died of dengue on Saturday after battling with it for nearly a week. His wife is unable to recover from the shock.

28-year-old Anup Baghel was detected with dengue while he was on duty. When his condition deteriorated, he was taken first to Mumbai's Mahatma Gandhi Memorial hospital and then to Hiranandani hospital. But he couldn't be saved.

Rajnikant Dhabad, another Mumbai resident, had to be shifted to the Intensive Care Unit or ICU after his platelet count dropped drastically. He is recovering now and considers himself lucky to have survived.

"I live in Govandi and I was admitted here 5 or 6 days back. Because of dengue I am still facing back pain and stomach ache," Mr Dhabale said.

Three people have died of Dengue this season in Maharashtra and over 2,500 cases have been reported.

Director of Sai Hospital Abid Sayyed said, "20 to 25 patients with dengue come to me every week. Most of these cases are from Govandi, Vashi Naka area, Kurla East and Chembur."

In a bid to tackle the menace of Dengue, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is carrying out routine inspection across the city.
