Congress Looks to Revive National Herald After 8 Years, Appoints New Editor

Both National Herald and Navjivan had ceased publication in 2008.

New Delhi: Congress today announced the revival of English daily National Herald and Hindi newspaper Navjivan. Both had ceased publication in 2008.

According to a statement issued by Congress Treasurer Motilal Vora Moti Lal Vohra, Neelabh Mishra, former Outlook Hindi Editor, has been named as Editor-in-Chief of both publications.

According to the Congress, both the newspapers will resume publication in the coming months and it will be followed by resumption of Urdu newspaper Quami Awaz.

"The Associated Journals Limited, a company founded in 1937 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, has taken steps to resume publication of its English and Hindi newspapers National Herald and Navjivan," the statement read.

The statement further said that Mr Mishra will build and lead the team for both National Herald and Navjivan and their digital and related assets.

The tagline of the forthcoming publications is "Freedom is in peril, defend it with all your might".

The revival of the defunct publications comes in the midst of a legal battle.

Last Saturday, a Delhi court had issued notice to Congress President Sonia Gandhi and her son and party Vice President Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case on a plea filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy.

Mr Swamy had filed a private complaint in Delhi's Patiala House court, accusing Mrs Gandhi and her son, Rahul Gandhi, of trying to "acquire the properties" of Associated Journals Limited, the company that owns these two publications that were started by Jawaharlal Nehru before Independence.

The Congress had all along denied these allegations and in January this year, the Board of Directors of Associated Journals had approved the revival plan of these two papers.

The case against the Gandhis along with other directors is going on in the Patiala House Court.
