Chief Justice's Grandson Wears a Mask. That's How Bad it is in Delhi.

The Supreme Court will consider higher fine for trucks entering Delhi and increasing pollution levels

New Delhi: During a hearing in which the Chief Justice of India shared that his grandson wore a mask because of pollution, it was decided that trucks entering Delhi may have to face a heavier fine of up to Rs 1,200.

The court today said it would examine a fine of Rs 600 to Rs 1,200 on trucks and also issued notice to the Centre and Delhi governments.

Harish Salve, the amicus curiae or friend of the court, said that 50,000 commercial vehicles enter Delhi and these polluters must pay more, so the state will have more to invest in clean transport.

Arguing his case, Mr Salve said he was forced to take steroids and his daughter was suffering from Asthma.

"This is an important case and in fact my grandson wears a mask," Chief Justice HL Dattu responded.

He added: "I feel the media must report particularly on this case and report all the proceedings in the court in front page"

The case will be heard next on Thursday.

The pollution caused by trucks in Delhi is 30 per cent, said Sunita Narain of the Centre for Science and Environment.

"We are happy the Chief Justice is taking this issue seriously and wants the centre and Delhi to respond immediately. It is not an adversarial issue and everyone must act together," Ms Narain said.
