Central Electricity Supply Utility of Orissa Announces Hour-Long Mandatory Power Cut

Bhubaneswar: The state run Central Electricity Supply Utility of Orissa (CESU) today announced load shedding for at least one hour a day in Bhubaneswar and some other districts even as the gruelling heat disrupted normal life in the state.

There would be phase-wise load shedding for 30 minutes each for one hour in Bhubaneswar, Khurda, Nimapada and Puri districts, Santosh Kumar Swain, Superintendent Engineer, CESU said.

Swain said the load shedding is required as two Extra High Tension (EHT) towers between Narendrapur and Khordha and between Narendrapur and Mendhasala had been damaged by a twister in Nachuni near Balugan on Saturday.

As a result, power supply from Narendrapur to Khordha and Mendhasala has been disrupted, Swain said adding that at least five days were required for repair of the two towers.

He said there would be a short supply of power of about 50-60 MW due to damage of towers.

"As Bhubaneswar requires 250-315 MW daily, it would not be possible to supply the required power as all transformers cannot take the load. Considering the above, phase-wise load shedding is indispensable", a CESU official said.

He said that the power cut for half an hour each will be made between 11 am till 4.30 pm in first phase and from 7 pm to 12 in the night. The CESU requested the people to cooperate with the administration in this regard.
