Aligarh: BSP leader Dharmendra Chaudhary was shot dead last night allegedly by unidentified persons in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh, a police officer said today.

Mr Chaudhary was on his way to a meeting when his Fortuner car was allegedly stopped by two men who fired at the vehicle near the old Nagar Nigam office in the Bannadevi area. The leader was shot multiple times.

Mr Chaudhary was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him brought dead, Senior Superintendent of Police J Ravindra Gaud.

"The BSP leader's driver has stated that the assailants were two in number. They stopped his vehicle and shot him. We have recovered 11 empty cartridges from the spot which indicate that he received similar number of bullet injuries," Mr Gaud said.

Mr Chaudhary was given a BSP ticket to contest from Atrauli for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections in 2017.

He was also a builder and a partner in a construction company.

Mr Gaud said that though the immediate motive behind the murder was not clear, there were several angles which were being looked into.

"The manner in which the killing was executed, it seems to be a handiwork of hired professionals," he said.
