Bodies Of 9 Soldiers Killed In Siachen Avalanche Flown To Base Camp

Nine soldiers of 19 Madras Regiment were killed after avalanche on Siachen glacier hit the army post.

Jammu: The bodies of nine soldiers, who died in an avalanche on Siachen glacier, were today brought down to the Siachen base camp.

The bodies will be taken to Leh after the weather is fit for operations.

"All the mortal remains have reached Siachen base camp today," a senior army officer said.

"Weather between Siachen base camp and Leh is reportedly not fit for helicopter operation. Therefore, all mortal remains have been moved to Military Hospital, Hunder (near Parthapur), for embalming and custody till weather clears," he said.

Bad weather conditions had earlier hampered the airlifting of the bodies from the high altitude post in Siachen glacier.

A soldier buried under 25-feet of snow was found alive in a critical condition six days after an avalanche hit the army post. Nine other soldiers of 19 Madras Regiment were, however, killed.

The rescued soldier Lance Naik Hanamanthappa Koppad, was rushed to an army hospital in Delhi, where he died on Thursday morning.
