Ahead Of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Visit To Sri Lanka, Some Tips From Karunanidhi

DMK Chief M Karunanidhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to use his Sri Lanka visit for the benifit of Lankan Tamils.

Ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Sri Lanka later this week, DMK President M Karunanidhi today said he should use his visit to the benefit of Lankan Tamils.

"He should cover demilitarisation and returning land to the Tamils in his address to the Sri Lankan Parliament," said Mr Karunanidhi in a press statement.

He also said, "Modi's agenda should not be confined to implementing the 13th Amendment to the Lankan Constitution, an Indian initiative aimed at giving more powers to provinces."

PM Modi will land n Colombo on Friday, almost a week after Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesingh's statement on Lanka's right to shoot Indian fishermen.

"Ranil's remark ahead of Modi's visit is not right. It's like a slap on the face. His statement is saddening. Does law permit killing of fishermen who stray?" Mr Karunanidhi said.

On Saturday Mr Wickremesinghe, told a local news channel Tanthi TV, "If someone tries to break into my house, I can shoot. If he gets killed, law allows me to do that." His statement came on a day when External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj was in Colombo to prepare for the prime minister's visit.

PM Modi tweeted on Sunday, "I embark on my first visit to Sri Lanka with great joy and confidence that this visit will make India's relations with Sri Lanka even stronger, in the larger interest of our people."

Mr Modi will address the Sri Lankan Parliament. He will be the first Indian prime minister to visit Jaffna, where he will lay the foundation stone for a cultural centre.
