AAP Government to Form Body to Address Complaints Against Delhi Police

Since his party came to power in Delhi in February, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had clashed repeatedly with the Delhi Police.

New Delhi: In a controversial move, the Aam Aadmi Party government of Delhi decided today to form a body to deal with complaints against the Delhi police.

The state level Police Complaint Authority will deal with complaints made against very senior police officers. So far, this is a function of the Public Grievance Commissions.

The Police Complaint Authority shall have a chairman and five members, who will be drawn from retired civil servants, police officers or the civil society, the Delhi cabinet decided today. The chairman will be chosen from a list of names proposed by the Lokayukta, Delhi Commission for Women and State Human Rights Commission.

There will also be a District Level Authority, which will deal with complaints related to officers and other staff of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police and below.

Since his party came to power in Delhi in February, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had clashed repeatedly with the Delhi Police and the Lieutenant Governor - claiming they were the means by which the Centre was controlling the Delhi government.

Pointing out that the police was failing to maintain law and order, he had also sought its administrative control.
