35-Year-Old Man Allegedly Commits Suicide Inside Gujarat Police Station

Police said a man allegedly committed suicide inside a police station in Gujarat.

Ahmedabad: A 35-year-old man allegedly committed suicide at a police station in Ahmedabad in the early hours on Wednesday, police said.

Rafiq Sheikh, who was arrested by the police under section 151 (arrest to prevent commission of cognizable offence) of the CrPC on Tuesday evening, hanged himself by the window grill of the lockup toilet, they said.

Mr Sheikh, a resident of Shah Alam area, used a shawl to hang himself by the grill of window inside the Ishanpur police station in the city, inspector MN Pandya told Press Trust of India.

"Sheikh was apprehended last evening after his daughter called up police control room complaining against him for seeking sexual favour. His wife had also lodged a complaint against him for domestic violence," Mr Pandya said on Wednesday.

"Last night, he tore up the shawl and used it to hang himself by the window grill of the toilet. When he was not found in the lock-up this morning, we searched toilet where his body was found hanging," the official said on Wednesday.

A team of Forensic Science laboratory visited the police station and took samples from the lock-up where the incident took place, while Mr Sheikh's body was sent to city civil hospital for post-mortem, Mr Pandya said.

A case has been registered in this regard, the official said, adding a probe was on.
