Lolab, Kupwara: Three terrorists have been killed during a fierce encounter with security forces in Lolab area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district.

The encounter started this morning after the Army and the police received a tip off about the presence of terrorists at Warnow village in Doban. As the troops zeroed in the cordon, they came under heavy firing. The security forces retaliated and in the ensuing encounter three terrorists were shot dead. The Army says the operation is still going on in the area.

The terrorists were believed to be part of a group that had infiltrated last week via Machil sector. The heavily armed group was intercepted by the Army. During the gunfight, one Army soldier and a terrorist were killed.

"We suspect they were part of the same group of infiltrators that was intercepted near the Line of Control in Machil Sector," said a senior police officer.

Infiltration has dramatically gone up this year. Official sources say over 50 terrorists have succeeded to infiltrate in last five months compare to zero infiltration in first four months of 2015.

Security forces and the police, however, have launched successful operations and several terrorists have been killed in recent gun battles in north Kashmir.
