3 Lawmakers Evicted From House on First Day of Goa Assembly Session

Goa State Legislative Assembly Hall.

Panaji: The first day of the Monsoon session of Goa Legislative Assembly in Panaji today began with Speaker Rajendra Arlekar ordering the marshals to take three opposition legislators out of the House.

The lawmakers - Vijay Sardessai, Rohan Khaunte (both independents) and Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco (Congress) - had rushed into the well of the House demanding resignation of industries minister Mahadev Naik over charges of financial misdemeanour.

The three lawmakers had trooped into the well holding placards and shouting slogans against Mr Naik and were eventually evicted from the Assembly on the orders of the Speaker.

Another two lawmakers, Vishwajit Rane (Congress) and Naresh Sawal (independent), also entered the well but they did not shout slogans or carry placards.

The opposition has been demanding Mr Naik's resignation alleging that the minister misused a housing loan sanctioned to him under a quota for lawmakers.

As the proceedings of the Assembly started at 11.30 am, all the five legislators rushed into well.

Mr Sardessai, Mr Khaunte and Lourenco interrupted the Speaker when he was about to start the Question Hour. As they did not move out of the well despite the Speaker repeatedly asking them, he called the marshals and had the three removed from the House.

Even during the Question Hour, Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party's Lavu Mamlatdar demanded an inquiry into the alleged fraud by the minister. But the Speaker refused to allow him to speak on the issue further.
