National Eligibility Test (NET) To Be Conducted Only Once A Year

New Delhi: Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has proposed to conduct National Eligibility Test (NET) annually and not twice a year. National Eligibility Test is a qualifying examination for college and University teachers and is also a selection procedure for award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF). Yesterday, UGC had also dissipated the ambiguity around the JULY 2017 NET exam and had said that CBSE would conduct the exam even though the board had earlier expressed its inability to conduct the exam.

According to sources, the proposal which is in its early phases is being considered given the amount of resources which goes into conducting the exam and the number of candidates who appear in the exam.

PTI quoted a source saying, "While conducting the exam once a year will make candidates more serious about it, resources can also be utilised judiciously as holding a national-level exam is a massive exercise. However, the idea is at a very nascent stage."

The said source also added that CBSE is considering this since only 17% of candidates who register for the exam appear and only 4% clear the exam.

Currently NET is held twice  year, in July and January.

Last year CBSE had approached MHRD and had expressed its inability to conduct the exam due to capacity crunch. Board is responsible for conducting JEE Main and NEET exam as well. As opposed to previous year trends, the board has not released any notification for the July NET exam yet. The delay in NET exam notification has caused panic in the student community who were due to take the exam this year.

UGC, however, cleared the air around the July NET exam and said yesterday that CBSE will conduct the exam until the government sets up the proposed National Testing Service (NTS).
