AAP Lawmaker Pawan Sharma Sentenced For Worker's Death In 2009, Gets Bail

AAP legislator Pawan Sharma was awarded 18-month jail term in a 2009 case.

New Delhi: A court in Delhi has awarded 18 months' imprisonment to Aam Aadmi Party legislator Pawan Sharma in a 2009 case related to the death of a factory worker by negligence.

Mr Sharma, a legislator from Adarsh Nagar, on Thursday told IANS that he will challenge the order and will file an appeal in the sessions court.

Metropolitan Magistrate Virender Singh on August 29 held Mr Sharma guilty under Sections 287 (negligent conduct with respect to machinery) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.

The court awarded 18-month jail term to Mr Sharma and slapped him with a fine of Rs 100,000.

However, the court granted him bail so that he can file an appeal against the order in the higher court.

A case was registered against him on August 5, 2009, at north Delhi's Samaypur Badli police station.

Delhi Police has alleged that a worker was injured while working in the factory to the negligent conduct of the company Sharma Industry, which deals with steel production.

The worker was rushed to a hospital but he died on day after the accident.

Mr Sharma was the proprietor of the company.
