Birbhum, West Bengal:

A pregnant woman and her in-laws were allegedly assaulted by Trinamool Congress supporters last night in West Bengal's Birbhum district. The family alleges that they were attacked because they support BJP.

As per the FIR or police complaint, six to seven men barged into the house of the 26-year old pregnant woman and started beating her with iron rods. Her father-in-law was also hit on the head. The police complaint further alleges that the group of men also tried to molest the 18-year-old sister in law of the pregnant woman.

The pregnant woman and her injured father in law were admitted to a local hospital last night. This morning, she was shifted to a district hospital.

While being admitted to the district hospital, the woman told reporters, "We were attacked by Trinamool supporters because we do not support them. We support the BJP."

The complaint, which was filed at 1pm today at Ilambazar police station, names five men, all of them known locally to be Trinamool supporters. Last night, the police station had allegedly refused to take an FIR.

The Birbhum superintendent of police Mukesh Kumar was unavailable for comments.

The BJP had so far been a small player in the state, but has made it clear that it has it eyes set on changing that. It has been building its base in the state after posting its best performance yet in the national elections last year.
