Mussoorie Bans Cycling On Mall Road

Cycling enthusiasts claim the administration has buckled under pressure from the local taxi union.

Mussoorie: A year-old initiative by the youth of Mussoorie has hit rough weather with a ban on bicycles on the popular Mall road.

While authorities cite long traffic jams and overflowing crowds for the decision, cycling enthusiasts claim the administration has buckled under pressure from the local taxi union.

"All of us are trying to develop Mussoorie as an adventure and eco-tourism destination and cycling is one of the best things we can do. We hope that the civil administration will help us promote cycling in Mussoorie," says Vipul Vashishta of Outdoor Yeti.

Justifying the move, sub-divisional magistrate said, "There is enough traffic on the Mall road already, hence, cycles won't be allowed. There are other alternative routes one can ride on."

However, bicycle rental outlets have raised objection to the move, claiming the administration has nipped the very concept of eco-tourism and adventure tourism in the bud.
