Sandalwood Worth Rs 16 Crore Seized At Private Warehouse Near Chennai Port

The latest raid is part of the DRI's surveillance programme that was launched last week.

Hyderabad: In a massive haul, about 36 tonnes of red sanders worth Rs 16.2 crore, was seized by the authorities at a private godown near Chennai sea port today.

The raid by officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence or DRI also led to the recovery of over 100 antiques, artefact and handicrafts.

In the raid conducted at a private warehouse on the Vanagaram-Ambattur Road near the Chennai sea port, sandalwood was seized from two containers.

The latest raid is part of the DRI's surveillance programme that was launched last week.

Export of sandalwood is banned under the Indian law.

Apart from sandalwood, stone idols of 'Mahavishnu', carved ivory statues of Goddess Lakshmi, Ganesha were also recovered from the raid.

DRI officials said cases have been booked under the Customs Act, Antiques and Art Treasures Act, Wildlife Protection Act and Foreign Trade Act and a probe is under way.
