Nearly 200 Dead in Floods, Lakhs Displaced; Bengal Worst Hit

More than 40 lakh people are affected in 14 districts of Gujarat.

New Delhi: Around 200 people have died and nearly one crore people have been affected in floods caused by heavy rain in West Bengal, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Manipur and Odisha. In Gujarat, 70 people have died since June, news agency Press Trust of India has reported. Large scale relief and rescue operations are underway in all the affected states.

Here are the 10 latest developments in this story:

  1. The number of deaths is the highest in West Bengal where 83 people have died so far in flood-related incidents including lightning strikes, wall collapse, electrocution, drowning and snake-bites.

  2. More than 60 lakh people and one lakh houses have been affected across 12 districts in the state, the Disaster Management Task Force has said. Close to 2,500 relief camps have been set up where over four lakh people have taken refuge. Officials said close to 80 lakh hecatres of crop land has been damaged and more than 10,000 cattle have been lost.

  3. In Gujarat, there have been no rains for the last six days and waters have largely receded. The total deaths from flood-related incidents in 14 districts stand at 71.

  4. Around 40 lakh people have been affected in Gujarat. More than ten lakh food packets have been airdropped or distributed and the government is assessing the damage in Banaskantha, Sabarkantha and Kutch districts. Extensive damage to cattle and crops has been reported in north Gujarat.

  5. In Rajasthan as well, no rains have been reported in the last six days but 38 have died owing to the flood in many parts of the state. Many have died due to swimming in swollen rivers and lakes.

  6. More than 630 people have been rescued from various districts in Rajasthan. Relief materials have been distributed to the affected population. Authorities are assessing the damage in Jalore, Sirohi, Barmer and Pali districts.

  7. In Odisha, floods have claimed five lives so far in the last week and affected nearly five lakh people. More than 1,500 people have been evacuated to safer places by rescue and relief teams. Seven relief camps have been set up and 132 boats pressed into service for rescue operations.

  8. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has spoken to Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, assuring the Centre's support in rescue and relief operations.

  9.  In Manipur, there has been no rain in the last three days. Four people have died and several more are feared dead in the Joumol village which has been washed away by floods and a landslide.

  10. More than 40 lakh people have been displaced in Manipur who are currently living in makeshift camps along roads, government sources say. Roads and bridges connecting villages and towns have been damaged greatly.
