Why These Young Voters Are Lining Up for PM Narendra Modi in Bihar

At every rally so far, the Prime Minister has made it a point to address youngsters directly with promises of jobs and better education.

Munger: Abhinav Jha, 20, and Ashok Kumar, 25, are among the two crore young voters in Bihar below the age of 30 who make up about one-fourth of the state's electorate for the elections this month.

At Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally in Munger yesterday, they were also among the thousands of youngsters who flocked to listen to him speak.

Currently a student of science, Abhinav wants to study engineering, but is upset that no government engineering college has opened up in Munger in the last decade under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's rule.

In the run up to the Bihar election, Nitish Kumar has promised an engineering college in all districts in the next five years but it's not enough to impress Abhinav.

"Nitish Kumar has been saying for six years that an engineering college will be set up but so far not even a foundation stone has been laid. We are now tired of these promises," he said.

Prime Minister Modi, taking on the combined might of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, the Rashtriya Janata Dal's Lalu Prasad and the Congress in the upcoming assembly election, has addressed several rallies in the state so far, and is expected to hold more.

At every rally so far, the Prime Minister has made it a point to address youngsters directly with promises of jobs and better education.

In Munger, PM Modi said, "I firmly believe that it is only the youth of Bihar who can change the destiny of the state. If Bihar ka paani (water) and Bihar ki Jawaani (youth) can be retained there can be some change on the ground. But all governments in the past have wasted both youth and water."

But many in the opposition are pointing to the disconnect between the BJP targeting Lalu Prasad over beef eating remarks versus the rhetoric of youth and their aspirations.

"No problem," says 25-year-old Amit Kumar, a budding politician and a youth leader with the BJP, "You people never ask (Asaduddin) Owaisi about the kind of remarks he makes. It's just the BJP that is targeted all the time."
