Jharkhand Government Wants CBI to Probe Tara Sahdev case

Tara Sahdev has alleged that her husband has strong political connections.

New Delhi: Jharkhand government wants the Central Bureau of Investigation to probe shooter Tara Sahdev's charges of forced conversion and torture against her husband.

Chief Minister Hemant Soren made the announcement in Ranchi on Friday, after a meeting with Tara."We assured all possible help to her. We agree to her demand regarding a CBI probe. We will refer the case to CBI," Mr Soren said.

Tara, 23, who won the gold medal in the 2009 Eastern Zone championship, said two months after her wedding, she discovered that her husband, Ranjeet Singh Kohli, was actually a Muslim, Rakibul Hussain.

She said her mother-in-law and spouse then forced her to convert, warned her not to share her experience with anybody, and kept her hostage in their home. After a month's captivity, she finally managed to escape in August, when her husband was away in Delhi.

Kohli was arrested on Tuesday, but Tara alleged that the case would never be handled properly, since he had strong political connections. She demanded a CBI inquiry into the case.

"I'm thankful to the police for their work and the way they arrested him. But I know I won't get justice because he has destroyed all the evidence that was against him," she had said.

Sahdev had said it was Kohli's connection with the state's minority welfare minister him that kept him out of police net. The minister, Haji Hussain Ansari, had shrugged off the charge, calling it a "small matter".

Kohli is currently in police custody, undergoing questioning.
