Captain Abhimanyu is reportedly deputed specifically by BJP chief Amit Shah for reviving the party in Haryana.
The BJP does not usually announce its chief ministerial candidates in advance. But just as there's a buzz is about Devendra Fadnavis getting the top job in Maharashtra, in Haryana, the talk is all about Captain Abhimanyu Singh Sindhu.
There is reason for the excitement. The young leader had reportedly been deputed specifically by BJP chief Amit Shah for reviving the party in Haryana. Add to it some broad hints dropped by party chief Amit Shah during a rally that had ruffled feathers of all other state party leaders.
A decorated former officer of the Army, the 47-year-old is a familiar face in Haryana. He had been the secretary of the state BJP twice - in 2004 and 2010 - and had contested in 2004 and 2005 for the Lok Sabha polls from Rohtak and in 2009, for the assembly election from Narnaund. He lost every time.
But Captain Abhimanyu proved his mettle during the Lok Sabha elections in April-May, when Shah handpicked him for his "Mission Uttar Pradesh". He had focused on western parts of the state that gave the BJP its richest haul in the polls.
And Shah made it clear that the Captain was in high favour.
At a rally in Narnaund, where Captain Abhimanyu was the BJP's candidate, Shah said the people want a chief minister who is "young, educated, efficient, patriotic and can directly speak with the PM to bring a spate of relief projects".
In an interview with NDTV, without commenting on the buzz, Captain Abhimanyu said, "I will not shy away from any responsibility the party high command chooses for me".
The founder-editor of a Hindi daily, Hari Bhoomi, he also has a degree in law. He has some business interests, including coal mining ventures.
At the hustings, he turned out to be fourth-time lucky - winning from Narnaund by a margin of over 50,000 votes.
"I will be happy if I am asked to lay mats in the party office, will be honoured if I become the Chief Minister," he told NDTV.
