The Coimbatore district administration has come out with an SMS-based system to help voters know the number of people in queue at polling booths. They can then go accordingly to cast their votes in the polls scheduled for today.
With this new method of intimating voters, the administration will not only create awareness among the public but will also help them in avoiding long queues at the booths, official sources said.
Three assembly segments - Coimbatore South, Coimbatore North and Koundanpalayam, have been selected for this system, claiming to be the first in Tamil Nadu.
The voters should send an SMS to 092480 82864 typing the first English letter of the constituency - S, N or K, in capital, to know the number of voters in the queue.
