Three Held For the Murder of Trinamool Congress Activist in Siliguri

Siliguri: Body of a local Trinamool Congress (TMC) activist, who had protested against sale of drugs in the area, was found in the outskirts of Siliguri today triggering protest by mob and arrest of three accused.

Commissioner of Police, Siliguri Commisionerate, Jagmohan said, "We have arrested three persons in connection with the death of Dipankar Roy on the basis of FIR lodged by his family members today."

North Bengal Development Minister Goutam Dev claimed Roy was an active member of TMC and had lodged a police complaint naming some persons three days back against alleged sale of contraband in Bhaktinagar area of the city.

Local opposition parties alleged the three arrested also belonged to the TMC.

The discovery of the youth's body, on the side of River Teesta in Nimbu Basti forest area this morning, angered local residents and they demonstrated in protest demanding punishment of those involved, the minister said.

His family told the media that matters came to head when the deceased youth had filed FIR against Ganesh Chhetri, Krishna Chhetri, Mithun Ray, Mankumar Ray as involved in sale of drugs in the area three days back and Roy had been receiving threats ever since.

The four named in FIR visited his residence and had asked him to accompany them late last night and his mutilated body was discovered this morning, the family said in the FIR at Bhaktinagar police station today.

The Commissioner refused to elaborate who among the four were already behind bars.

The mob also ransacked the houses of one of the four accused and set fire to shanties owned by them along Hill Cart Road before a strong police contingent brought the situation under control.
