Cyclone Kyant Moving Towards Andhra Pradesh, Alert Issued: 10 Updates

Hyderabad: A cyclone, Kyant, is heading towards the coast of Andhra Pradesh and is expected to hit the coast over the week-end. Officials at the meteorological department said the cyclone may make landfall in the coastal Prakasam district on Saturday.

  1. The cyclone is currently located over the Bay of Bengal, 570 km from Visakhapatnam, the met office has said. Its intensity will increase heavily in the next 24 hours.

  2. Rainfall is expected to start in coastal areas from Thursday. South coastal Andhra Pradesh will have heavy rainfall on October 28.

  3. The Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre said the sea will be rough from Thursday and strong winds will blow along and off the coast.

  4. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea along and off Andhra Pradesh coast. Those already in sea have been asked to return.

  5. The Navy is also on alert for Cyclone Kyant, stationing ships with divers, doctors, inflatable rubber boats, helicopters and relief material on board.

  6. "The system is very likely to intensify during the next 24 hours. It is most likely to move west-southwest towards west-central Bay of Bengal during next 72 hours," read a bulletin from the met office.

  7. The cyclonic storm was earlier expected to be moving towards West Bengal and Odisha but it subsequently changed direction.

  8. The bulletin said it moved further west-southwestwards in the last six hours at a speed of 14 kilometer per hour. The current wind speed is 70-80 kmph, the meteorological office has said.

  9. The 1,000-km coastline of Andhra Pradesh is vulnerable to cyclonic storms during the October-December period.

  10. In October 2014, cyclone HudHud had sturck the coastline of Andhra Pradesh, killing 49 people and affecting nearly 21 lakh families. It also caused massive destruction of infrastructure in the port city of Visakhapatnam.
