Krishna, Andhra Pradesh: A 16-year-old girl has been strangled by her mother in the Nandigama town of Andhra Pradesh's Krishna district, police said, in an apparent case of dishonour killing.

The mother Bibi Jaan was angry that despite several warnings, her younger daughter Najma would not listen to her and sever ties with a 28-year-old man Deepak, who lived in the neighbourhood.

After an argument on Wednesday, the mother in a fit of range, strangled the daughter, police said. The mother later took an auto-rickshaw, telling neighbours her daughter was not well and she was taking her to the hospital, they said.

Bibi Jaan called her husband and both of them tried to complete their daughter's last rites. But Deepak, who learnt about what happened, complained to the police.

The police seized the body and sent it for an autopsy. After being taken into custody, the mother reportedly confessed that she had killed her daughter.

"What is the point of having a daughter who does not care about the family honour?" her husband said. The couple have an elder daughter who is married.

"That man (Deepak) does not belong to our religion. And he was a married man," the father said.

Deepak is said to have divorced his wife a few years ago.
